The Surinam cherry, also known as Pitanga cherries, Cayenne cherries, Florida cherries, and Brazilian cherries, is native to South America. These small fruits have an ovate to rounded, slightly flattened appearance. Their thin, smooth, glossy skin is strongly ribbed with 7-8 vertical ridges, changing in color from green to red-blue and crimson as they ripen. It's crucial to wait until they're fully ripe to enjoy them as they'll be delicate to the touch and easily come off the stem. When ripe, Surinam cherries have a mildly earthy, acidic, and sweet-tart flavor. These cherries are a great source of vitamin C for a strong immune system and vitamin A for organ health. They also offer antioxidants to protect cells from free radical damage, along with calcium and phosphorus for strong bones and teeth. Additionally, Surinam cherries provide iron for hemoglobin production, which carries oxygen through the bloodstream.
