Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is a fascinating plant that grows in long, hanging strands from trees, giving off an ethereal, almost mystical appearance. Despite its name, Spanish moss isn't actually a moss; it's an epiphytic flowering plant, related to bromeliads and orchids. It's native to the southeastern United States, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

LIGHT

Spanish moss thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but prefers filtered light or partial shade. Avoid placing it in full sun, as this can cause it to dry out too quickly.

CARE TIPS

Water: Spanish moss absorbs moisture from the air and rain, so it doesn't need to be watered like traditional plants. However, if you're growing it indoors or in a dry climate, mist it with water occasionally to keep it hydrated. Alternatively, you can soak it in water for about 20-30 minutes every week or two during dry periods.

Humidity: Spanish moss prefers high humidity levels. If you're growing it indoors, placing it in a bathroom or near a humidifier can help maintain adequate moisture levels. In drier climates, misting it regularly or soaking it in water can also help increase humidity around the plant.

Air circulation: Good air circulation is important for Spanish moss to prevent it from becoming too damp and developing mold or rot. If growing it indoors, ensure there's adequate airflow around the plant. Outdoors, natural breezes should provide sufficient air circulation.

Temperature: Spanish moss is tolerant of a wide range of temperatures, but it generally prefers warmer conditions. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below freezing, as this can damage the plant. It can tolerate temperatures up to about 100°F (38°C) but may require more frequent watering in hot, dry conditions.

Support: Spanish moss typically grows on trees or other structures, using them for support. If growing it indoors, you can hang it from hooks or place it in a hanging basket. Outdoors, you can drape it over tree branches or other structures.

Pruning: While Spanish moss doesn't require regular pruning, you may want to trim away any dead or browned sections to improve the plant's appearance. Use clean scissors or pruning shears to remove dead growth, taking care not to damage the healthy parts of the plant.
