The Peacock Fern, scientifically known as Selaginella willdenowii, is a fascinating plant with its lush, iridescent foliage that resembles a peacock's tail hence the name. However, it's not a true fern but rather a member of the Selaginella genus, which are spikemosses, a type of fern ally. This plant is native to tropical regions, typically found in Southeast Asia and parts of Australia. Peacock ferns are characterized by their striking green and blue foliage, which can add a unique touch to indoor or outdoor gardens. They thrive in moist, humid environments and prefer partial shade, making them suitable for terrariums or shaded areas in gardens.

Moderate maintenance

LIGHT

Peacock Ferns prefer indirect or filtered sunlight. They can tolerate low light conditions but avoid exposing them to direct sunlight for extended periods, as it may scorch their delicate foliage.

CARE TIPS

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as this can lead to wilting and damage to the plant.

Humidity: Peacock Ferns thrive in high humidity environments. If you're growing them indoors, consider placing them in a bathroom or kitchen where humidity levels are naturally higher. Alternatively, you can increase humidity by misting the foliage regularly or using a humidity tray.

Temperature: These ferns prefer temperatures between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Avoid exposing them to extreme temperature fluctuations or drafts, as this can stress the plant.

Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains moisture but doesn't become waterlogged. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and coarse sand works well for Peacock Ferns.

Fertilizing: Feed your Peacock Fern with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing during the winter months when growth slows down.

Pruning: Trim off any dead or yellowing foliage to promote new growth and maintain the plant's appearance. You can also gently prune to shape the plant if it becomes leggy or overgrown.

Repotting: Repot Peacock Ferns when they outgrow their container, typically every 1-2 years. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one and refresh the soil to provide fresh nutrients.
