Lemon vine plant, scientifically known as Pereskia aculeata, is a tropical plant native to Central and South America. It is a member of the cactus family and is unique in that it has large, green leaves and produces edible fruit. Common names include Barbados gooseberry, blade-apple cactus, leaf cactus, rose cactus. The leaves are lemon scented, sweet-smelling blooms and delicious, juicy lemon like fruits are edible, containing high quantities of protein, iron and other nutrients, and it is a popular vegetable in parts of the Brazilian state. The Lemon Vine creates a beautiful foliage plant with its yellow to bronze and even orange, thick succulent leaves that adorn this vining tropical cactus. Makes a wonderful hanging basket, allow it to spill from mixed containers, or train it as a vine. More light produces richer foliage color. Mature plants may produce white to pale yellow flowers in spring or fall that may be followed by small cactus fruits.
