Lemba Fruit/ Curculigo Capitulata /Curculigo Latifolia is a stemless, evergreen, perennial plant producing a cluster of leaves from the roots and growing about 60cm tall. Lemba is miracle ginger. Ironically, the taste of the fruit is not sweet but rather sour. However, after eating the fruits, the food consumed after will taste sweet. The chemical responsible for the sweetness is a protein called curculin. Lemba is widely grown as an ornamental in warm temperate to tropical areas. It can also be grown in the humid subtropics and in essentially frost-free, warm temperate areas that require fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. All parts of the plant are used in folk medicine. The leaves provide a strong, lightweight fiber that is used to make nets, rope, and cloth, and roots are brewed to treat various illnesses.
