Jewel Orchid is a common name for several species of orchids known for their stunning foliage rather than their flowers. The most popular species of Jewel Orchid is Ludisia discolor, which is prized for its velvety, dark green to almost black leaves with striking red, white, or pink veins. Jewel Orchids are terrestrial, meaning they naturally grow on the forest floor, and are known for being relatively easy to care for compared to other orchid varieties.

DIFFICULTY

Moderate - High maintenance

LIGHT

Jewel Orchids prefer low to medium indirect light. They thrive in conditions that mimic the forest understory, so avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch their delicate leaves.

CARE TIPS

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top layer of soil feels slightly dry to the touch. Jewel Orchids do not like to dry out completely, so regular watering is important.

Humidity: These orchids prefer high humidity, ideally between 50-70%. Increase humidity by placing the plant on a humidity tray, using a humidifier, or grouping it with other plants.

Temperature: Jewel Orchids thrive in temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C). They are sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, so keep them in a stable environment.

Soil: Use a well-draining orchid mix that retains some moisture, such as a mix of fine bark, peat moss, and perlite. This helps mimic their natural environment and prevents root rot.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble orchid fertilizer at half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter.

Pruning: Prune any dead or yellowing leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance and health. This also helps to encourage new growth.

Propagation: Jewel Orchids can be propagated through stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem with a few leaves attached and place it in a moist potting mix or water until roots develop.
