Fiddlewood is a beautiful shrub or a small tree with long tassels of richly scented white flowers.Native to tropical America.Flowers are pendant and cover the tree from spring to fall. Foliage is dark green, shiny, ornamental. Small and dioecious evergreen tree,leaves up to 20 cm by 10 cm, attached to orange-yellow petioles, green but turns orange when aged and drop off. Flowers : Fragrant flowers;unisexual, up to 30cm long in racemes, usually terminal and drooping. Fruits : globose – shaped, red or orange when immature, turns black when ripe. Genus name ‘Citharexylum’ originated from Greek kithara and xylon, meaning lyre or fiddle and wood respectively. Common name fiddlewood derived from the use of the wood for musical instruments.
