Engkala/ Litsea Garciae is an evergreen tree, originally discovered growing wild and is believed to be native to Borneo. Engkalak is a small fruit with a delicate, avocado-like flavor. The thin skin turns from pink to purple. These creamy white flesh fruits are seated on cup-shaped cheering bracts. Engkala contains some vitamin C, potassium, antioxidants, and fiber. Engkalak is one of the traditional foods of the Iban people in Borneo. In addition to using the fruits for food, the Iban people also use the bark of the tree to treat insect stings, boils, burns, and snakebites.
