Croton 'Mammy' thrives in bright, indirect light. They need plenty of light to maintain their vibrant colors. Direct sunlight can be tolerated but may cause leaf scorch if too intense. Insufficient light can cause the colors to fade and the plant to become leggy.

Watering
Frequency: Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry. Crotons prefer consistently moist soil but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause leaf drop.
Water Quality: They generally tolerate tap water well, but using distilled or rainwater can be beneficial if your tap water is particularly hard or chlorinated.
Humidity
Preference: Crotons thrive in high humidity. If the air is too dry, the leaf edges might brown, and the plant may drop leaves. Regular misting, using a humidity tray, or placing a humidifier nearby can help maintain adequate humidity.
Temperature
Range: Crotons prefer warm temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C). They do not tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 60°F (15°C) well, which can cause leaf drop.
Soil
Type: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a standard houseplant mix or a mix of peat, perlite, and pine bark. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizing
Schedule: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows.
Pruning
Maintenance: Prune to remove any dead or yellowing leaves and to control the plant's size and shape. Pruning can also encourage bushier growth.
Propagation
Method: Croton 'Mammy' can be propagated through stem cuttings. Take a cutting with at least one node and a few leaves, and place it in water or moist soil until roots develop.
Pests and Diseases
Common Issues: Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Regularly inspect the plant and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Toxicity
Caution: Crotons are toxic if ingested, so keep them out of reach of pets and children. The sap can also be a skin irritant, so it’s advisable to wear gloves when handling the plant.
Additional Tips
Placement: Given its need for bright light and high humidity, Croton 'Mammy' does well in well-lit rooms, such as near a south- or west-facing window, provided it’s protected from direct afternoon sun.
Leaf Drop: Crotons are known to drop leaves when they experience sudden changes in their environment, such as moving to a new location or changes in temperature or humidity. To reduce leaf drop, try to keep the plant’s environment consistent.
