Black Jamun/ Syzygium Cumini is a fast-growing evergreen tropical tree from the flowering plant family Myrtaceae, native to East Asia—China, India, and Malaysia. Black Jamun is commonly known as Malabar plum, Java plum, Black plum Jambolan or Jamun. It is a very ancient fruit crop, and its fruits and seeds(for medicinal purposes) are sold in the local market and also planted for shade and as ornamental. The purple, olive-shaped fruits have slightly sweet, juicy, pleasant, slightly bitter, astringent flesh. Fruit can be eaten raw or made into jams, jellies, and juices. A coffee-like beverage is made from dried and ground-up seeds. Both the seeds and the fruit are diuretic and have important carminative and astringent properties. The seeds also reduce blood sugar levels and are useful in the treatment of diabetes.
