LIGHT

Araucaria trees thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight but avoid placing them in intense, direct afternoon sun as it can scorch the leaves. Indoors, place them near a bright window.

CARE TIPS

Watering
Frequency: Water the tree when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. During the winter, reduce watering as the tree's growth slows.
Water Quality: Araucaria trees generally tolerate tap water well, but using distilled or rainwater can be beneficial if your tap water is particularly hard or chlorinated.
Humidity
Preference: These trees prefer moderate to high humidity. If the air in your home is very dry, consider using a humidity tray, misting the tree regularly, or placing a humidifier nearby.
Temperature
Range: Araucaria trees prefer cooler temperatures between 60-75°F (16-24°C). They are not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Soil
Type: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a mix designed for cacti or succulents, or a combination of peat, perlite, and sand. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizing
Schedule: Feed the tree with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the tree's growth slows.
Pruning
Maintenance: Pruning is generally not necessary for Araucaria trees. Remove any dead or yellowing branches to keep the tree looking tidy. Avoid cutting the central leader (the main upright stem), as this can affect the tree's natural shape.
Propagation
Method: Araucaria trees are typically propagated from seeds, which can be slow and challenging. Seeds should be fresh and sown in a well-draining mix. Keep the soil moist and provide bright, indirect light.
Pests and Diseases
Common Issues: Keep an eye out for common pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Regularly inspect the tree and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Diseases: Ensure good air circulation and proper watering practices to prevent fungal diseases such as root rot and needle blight.
