Ant Ferns are known for their unique, leathery fronds that can vary in shape but often have a thick, glossy appearance. The fronds are typically green, and some species have a slightly fuzzy texture. The rhizomes of ant ferns are thick and tuberous, often forming interesting shapes and patterns that add to the plant's ornamental appeal. These ferns have an epiphytic growth habit, meaning they naturally grow on other plants or substrates rather than in the soil. They can form symbiotic relationships with ants, providing shelter within their rhizomes in exchange for nutrients.

DIFFICULTY

Moderate maintenance

LIGHT

Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage the fronds, while low light can slow growth. An east or north-facing window is ideal.

CARE TIPS

Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top layer of the medium feels dry. Avoid letting the rhizomes sit in water, as this can lead to rot.
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments, ideally above 60%. Use a humidifier, place the plant on a humidity tray, or mist the fronds regularly to maintain adequate moisture levels.
Temperature: Optimal temperature range is between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Protect the plant from cold drafts and avoid significant temperature fluctuations.
Soil: Use a well-draining, loose medium such as a mix designed for epiphytes. A combination of orchid bark, sphagnum moss, and a small amount of potting soil works well. This ensures good aeration and prevents waterlogging.
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can harm the plant.
Mounting: As an epiphyte, ant ferns can be mounted on pieces of bark or grown in hanging baskets with a loose, well-draining medium. This mimics their natural growing conditions.
Pruning: Remove any dead or damaged fronds to maintain the plant's appearance and health. Pruning is generally minimal with ant ferns.
